General Motors (GM) US Privacy Statement for Job Applicants


Your privacy is important to General Motors (GM) Company. We want you to know that Personally Identifiable Information (PII) GM collects from you will be treated with care.

GM's Privacy Statement for General Motors Job Applicants lets you know how General Motors (GM) handles Personal Information that you share with General Motors on the GM Careers website, and throughout the General Motors hiring process.

Personal Information Collection and Use

General Motors hiring process consists of multiple steps designed to evaluate your skills and qualifications for a particular position. When you choose to participate in the General Motors hiring process, you will be asked to provide GM with Personal Information about yourself. The Personal Information that you provide will be used to match your skills and interest to General Motors job requirements. Your Personal Information will also be used to contact and identify you throughout the hiring process.

The following are examples of Personal Information that may be collected in the hiring process:

* Address
* Employment history

* Race and ethnicity (only if required by law) 

* Health Information (only if required by law)
* Government Issued ID (only be collected if an offer of employment is extended to you)


The information that you share with General Motors may be used by GM suppliers exclusively for the purposes of administering services in the General Motors hiring process. For example, GM may provide Personal Information about you to a supplier that will administer selection tools such as role-plays and decision challenges, or with a supplier that will perform a background verification. We will not share your Personal Information with other third parties for their independent use without your permission. However, nothing in this Privacy Statement prevents the disclosure of your Personal Information for legal compliance, or in response to government inquiries. Additionally, nothing in this Privacy Statement prevents the use of the legal process by General Motors or other parties.

Cookies and Other Tracking Devices

We may use cookies and other tracking devices on our websites. Using cookies on our sites provides benefits to you, such as allowing you to maintain your login information between visits. The use of cookies also allows us to measure site activity to provide a better user experience. Cookies and other tracking devices may be used to tell us the time and length of your visit, the pages you look at on our site, the site you visited just before coming to ours, and the name of your Internet service provider.

Personal Information Security

General Motors recognizes the importance of safeguarding your Personal Information under its control from theft, inappropriate use, or improper distribution and will use reasonable organizational, technical and administrative measures to protect your Personal Information.  All personal information collected in the hiring process will be scanned and stored on servers located in the United States.  It should be recognized that data transmission over the internet or data storage systems is not a 100% secure therefore, no company can perfectly protect Personal Information.

Accessing and Updating Personal Information

If you would like to review, correct, or update the Personal Information previously provided to General Motors, you can do so by updating your submission on the GM Careers Website at:  We will comply with your request as soon as practicable.

Storage and Retention of your Personal Information

Your personal information is stored in the database of our service provider on a server located in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.  You are able to update or delete your resume submitted to GM career site at your discretion. We will retain your person information for a retention period or as determined by litigation hold. 

Cross Border Transfer of Personal Information

Your Personal Information may be stored and processed in any country where we have other GM Subsidiaries or where we have engaged a service provider.  By using the GM career site you consent to the transfer of your Personal Information to countries outside of your country of residence that may not have the same data protection laws as those in your home country.

Sensitive Information

We do not collect or process any sensitive Personal Information (e.g. information concerning religion, racial, ethnic origin, political opinions or other beliefs, union affiliation or activities, health, sexuality, criminal administrative proceedings or sanctions) as part of our hiring process unless required by law.  Therefore, we ask that you do not disclose or otherwise send this information through our website or directly to General Motors.

Changes to This Privacy Statement

We retain the right to change this Privacy Statement. The effective date of this Privacy Notice is noted in the header at the top of this page. Any changes to this Privacy Statement will be posted in a timely manner.
